Suva, Nasinu seal waste collection deal

- NANISE NEIMILA

NASINU ratepayers will now expect efficient services for waste collection after a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between the Suva City and Nasinu Town Councils.

The agreement will enable Nasinu residents, businesses and informal settlements to access regular and efficient waste collection service.

Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Premila Kumar said under the agreement Nasinu Town Council will pay Suva City Council the cost of this service which includes green waste; household waste and hard rubbish collection”. “The cost of services shall be met by the Nasinu Town Council with the financial assistance from the Fijian Government. The

Government will be investing $1.6 towards this essential service.”

“This agreement has come about because of poor waste collection service provided by the Nasinu Town Council.”

Invoking the provision in the Local Government Act for shared services, Minister Kumar said “this was the best option to engage Suva City Council which has been providing very efficient waste collection”.

The Minister urged all Nasinu residents and businesses to strictly follow the timetable for the collection of waste and not to pile up rubbish outside the published schedule for collection.

“Not adhering to the collection schedule has resulted in waste pile up in the past.”

“Vital awareness raising on better household waste practice will be undertaken by the Nasmillion inu Town Council. This will allow residents and businesses as well as informal settlements in the Nasinu area to be better informed about their responsibilities to reduce waste and dispose appropriately only at the times allocated for every suburb of Nasinu.

Minister Kumar reminded those Nasinu ratepayers who have not paid their town rates and garbage fees to come forward and make arrangements with the council for payment.

She thanked those ratepayers who have been up to date with their payments and she doesn’t want them to suffer because of defaulting ratepayers.

“Reforms are being undertaken to make Nasinu Town Council efficient and service oriented with the appointment of a new CEO. She has called for the cooperation of all stakeholders in achieving this goal.”
