Prolonging the Agony at USP Tukai Lagonilakeba, Nadi

The USP Vice Chancellor Prof Pal Ahluwalia and his deputy vice chancellor Prof Derick Armstrong must both vacate their offices voluntarily as they have become untenable.

Their nonsense is now being politicised by many opportunists including the workers, politicians and the students themselves where the two have created instability and division in the process.

To put a stop to this time wasting exercise, I would like to ask the permanent secretary, Yogesh Karan, and the director for immigration to please kindly recommend the revocation of both their work permits forthwith to the Minister for Immigration and get them both to leave the country immediately as students do not need this kind of distraction.

Small Island Nations including the host country Fiji who provide finance for the upkeep of USP have already got enough issues to deal with on their plates as sovereign states.

As professors they both should come up with solutions to their different management styles.

One of the terms for an expatriate’s work permit conditions is to maintain the peace in this country at all times.

What a disgrace they are in holding this great learning institution to ransom with their conduct. Vinaka Vakalevu to the Government through the Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar, for not paying the Fijian Government Grant to USP, that is the way to go.

Happy Teachers’ Day Neelz Singh , Lami

World Teachers’ Day falls on October 5, to celebrate their contribution toward learning and teaching, also known as International Teacher’s Day. It celebrates the role teachers play in providing quality education at all levels.

This enables children and adults of all ages to learn to take part in and contribute to their local community and global society. A good teacher has greater influence in shaping the life of an individual even more than his/her parents.

COVID-19 has changed teaching patterns to online platforms and some schools and Institutions have welcomed this idea of online via zoom or Moodle system

In our country’s culture, a teacher has been given a respected place. A teacher’s proper guidance and support is very important in achieving one’s goal in life.

Every successful individual always remembers the constructive role played by his/her teacher in their school-college days.

It would be better if Teachers’ Day remains as a day of teacher-student bonding of learning and respect as it has always been.

I leave you with a quote by Solomon Ortiz: “Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students.”

Hats off to all teachers and wishing them Happy Teacher’s Day!
