Flood Waters Hit in Nadi
Flood waters hit areas in Nadi Town and parts of the Western Division after heavy rain hit yesterday
People waded their way through to the Nadi Bus Station after it was flooded.
The Fiji Meteorological Service headquarters in Nadi issued a flood warning for low-lying areas as a low-pressure system remains moving over the group.
The Nadi Duty Forecaster said today the weather would become fine.
For the Western Division they are expecting cloudy periods with brief showers in the morning and afternoon and are expecting cloudy periods with isolated evening thunderstorms.
For the Eastern Division they are expecting some showers during the day.
Lau and Lomaiviti Group are expected to have cloudy periods and some showers.
For the Northern Division, brief showers are expected in the morning and are likely to increase with some showers in the evening.
The forecaster said on Monday we are expecting fine weather apart from isolated evening showers and sunny showers for larger interior parts of the island.
Maqelevu residents prepare for worst
As a result of yesterday’s wet weather, residents in Maqalevu have been making preparations. One resident, 57-year-old Adriu Naiyaga, said 10 families around his area were often affected by the flood during heavy rain.
“There are nine families here who are mostly affected by this flash flooding weather condition. The water level rises from the river and floods into all this area,” he said. The father of five children said the families were always prepared for such weather conditions as there were evacuation centres provided.
“We have been living in this area for more than 20 years now,” the Lomaiviti native said.
“But we are always prepared for such adverse weather conditions. When the water level rises up to our doorsteps that is when we move to the evacuation centres.”
