Teenagers assist needy through Nadi food drive
ANadi-based food drive initiative run by teenagers has been established to assist at least five families who need help.
Inari Fiji team president, 18-year-old Malika Singh, said they were a non-profitable organisation and they chose this project because they felt there were people who required assistance.
She said many people had asked for jobs and or assistance from their families. She was later able to collect funds and help others as part of a group.
“We were able to identify people who lost their jobs and are struggling to earn for their families,” she said.
“And we are personally going to visit families comprising four to seven members per household, therefore we will be assisting at least 22 individuals.
“As teenagers we are trying our best to make a change in the lives of others.
“We are hoping that with time and a few more donations we can increase the number and help at least 10 families,” she added.
The organisation, which has 17 members, receives donations in form of cash from the teachers of Sangam College and from family members.
“We have received great support from our teachers and from the entire Inari Fiji team,” she said.
While teachers and family members have been able to help out, Ms Singh said their organisation has had their biggest challenge of attempting to get companies to respond to their donation requests.
With the motto to encourage young people to give back to the society by actively volunteering, Ms Singh said: “I’d like to say that these are our people and we should help them, keeping humanity alive is our responsibility.”
She is encouraging young people to make a change and said their doors were open for those interested in volunteering.
She said they would continue the drive to accommodate more families who they couldn’t help last week due to limited funding.
The young leader is determined to expand her group and cover more areas. com.fj
