Roy continues to shine as age grows with classic touches and goals in the Indian Super League competitio­n says Fiji Football Associatio­n chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf.

He made the comments after Fijis wonder boy Roy Krishna scored his sixth goal for ATK Mohun Bagan FC in the Indian Super League competitio­n.

Krishna played a starring role as ATK beat North East United 2-0 to stretch their lead on the Indian Super League table yesterday. “His goal reignited the team’s performanc­e in the second half and that what pushed the team to victory,” Yusuf said.

“There was really nothing on for ATK from the kickoff and it took Roy to put on a massive performanc­e to lift the team’s morale.” “He was at the right place, right time to head that ball pass the goal keeper.”

“As he grows older, Roy is showing his maturity in football and playing against some world class players which he used to back in Wellington.”

“Roy is a class player and a good role model to young players here in Fiji who are setting their sights on profession­al football as their career.”

“He’s part of our squad that will be playing in the Oceania World Cup qualificat­ions and with his current form his inclusion will really boost the national side.” “He will add experience and exposure amongst the youngsters in the national squad.” “The qualificat­ion matches will be happening towards the end of the year so by that time the Indian League season will be done and he will be back in the country.” “We are looking forward to having him back at home so we can build up our combina - tion for the competitio­n.”

Yusuf added the Siberia lad is making a name for himself in the competitio­n.

“I was watching the game too, to see the joy on his team mates and the ATK fans faces is something special,” he said.

“His making a big impact in the competitio­n amongst the best players in Asia and making headlines in a country that has about quarter million population.”

Krishna was i n - volved in both goals and was threat throughout in yet another strong outing for the Vodafone Fijian national team captain.

The Kolkata club took the lead in the 51st minute of play after Krishna headed the ball into the net after the opposition defenders failed to clear the ball from a corner kick. They struck again in the 57th minute through an own goal from constant pressure on the United defense.

The win saw ATK remain in first place a point ahead of Mumbai City, with an important game against Mumbai City coming up on January 12.

Krishna and Co. will hope to build some momentum and continue their winning form with the remaining round of competitio­n.

The side know’s the match against second place Mumbai City will be a tough one as they sit on 19 points on the table, a win could boost their chances of moving up the ladder.

Roy vital for Fiji

With his internatio­nal experience having played at the A-League and now the Indian Super League Krishna will play a vital role in the country’s football side’s preparatio­n for the world cup qualificat­ions this year. At 33 years of age the former Labasa striker has a very good record in the Oceania region in the past.

He played 38 games for Fiji scoring 21 goals in his carrer and during his stint with Waitakere United from 2012-2013 in the New Zealand Football Championsh­ip he played 103 games and scoring 72 goals.He then joined Wellington Phoenix in the A-League from 2013-2019 where he played 125 games and 52 goals.

Krishna made the move to the Indian Super League joining ATK Mohun Bagan from 2019 till today making a name for himself playing 27 games scoring 20 goals.In his profession­al carrer Krishna has played 260 profession­al football games and scored 146 goals more than any footballer in the country.

The Olympian will surely be a key player when the Fiji football team prepare for the World Cup qaulifier knowing the Siberia lad’s goal scoring ability is something that teams around the Oceania region will look to try and stop.

National football headcoach Flemming Serritslev will work very closely with Krishna and the team in trying to workout strageties that the football side can create inorder to win.

Krishna’s goal scoring ability will be for Fiji in our bit to secure a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The stats and achievemen­t speaks for itself that the deadly striker is our main weapon should coach Serritslev look for a suitable partner to pair up with Krishna.

Some of the find of the season were Suva striker Sairusi Naulubu who was very consistent last season in the Vodafone Premiere League (VPL) his speed and goal scoring ability could be the answer in a striking force with Krishna.

Another Fijian player could be Australian base Frankston Pine Football Club striker Tito Vodowaqa. A young player with speed and good finishing. He played for Nadi last season and then signed his contract with the Pines.

According to a Frankston Pine official Victor Kumar Vodowaqa is in great form.

“He had been working so hard at training,” he said.
