Morning Devotion to Start The Day

- SHALVEEN CHAND SUVA Edited by Selita Rabuku Feedback: shalveen.chand@fijisun.com.fj

What better way to start your day than a morning devotion. This is how the 98 men of Suva City Council garbage collection team start their day.

Everyday at 6.30am, the team gather at the depot in Samabula for their morning devotion before they are dispersed to their designated work zones.

They work six days a week and they cover an average of 30 kilometres on their collection rounds.

Suva and Lami special administrator chair Isikeli Tikoduadua said the dedication of these men was important towards having the cleanest city in the region.

Mr Tikoduadua paid a visit to the depot yesterday to thank the team for the good work and to continue the momentum into 2021.

“I am happy to say the dedication of this team in particular has gone towards shaping attitudes towards a cleaner Suva,” he said.

“Rain or sunshine. These are the people out there providing the essential service of garbage collection.

“Despite the abuse hurled at them, they are out there doing what is required of them.”

Suva’s garbage collection service has been extended into Nasinu now.

Mr Tikoduadua said garbage collection like many other things was a partnership which required the people of Suva, Lami and now Nasinu to follow.

“We will be there doing what we are supposed to be doing. In return, we hope all kitchen refuse is packed in garbage bags and ready for collection,” he said.

Mr Tikoduadua raised a concern on the misuse of the large bins placed near informal settlements.

He said they have seen that some people have been disposing rubbish that were not supposed to be disposed into these large bins.
