352 Villagers Enjoy Steady Water Supply
Japan hands over upgraded system developed by Habitat for Humanity Fiji.
Villagers of Nakorovou in Serua will now enjoy regular water supply to meet the needs of the 52 households.
This comes after the government of Japan commissioned a water supply project, worth FJ$96,748. Under this project, Habitat for Humanity Fiji (HFHF) successfully developed the upgraded water system, which consists of a water source catchment, a 3.6 kilometrelong water pipeline, 15 standpipes and three 10,200-litre water tanks. Embassy of Japan Chargés d’affaires ad interim, Hada Tsuguyoshi, said the previous water system did not provide enough water for the 352 villagers because the supply was unstable.
“I am sure the project will improve quality of daily lives and the health and sanitation of the community,” he said
“I also believe the project will empower women. It relieves the burden of women, who need to spend enormous amounts of time taking washing to water sources and fetch water from there.”
A village water committee has been organised by HFHF and the committee members have been trained through on-site workshops for the sustainable use and maintenance of the water system.
The project comes under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme.
I also believe the project will empower women. It relieves the burden of women, who need to spend enormous amounts of time taking washing to water sources and fetch water from there. Hada Tsuguyoshi Chargés d’affaires ad interim, Embassy of Japan
It is part of the overall Japanese ODA implemented by the Embassy of Japan to empower the people from the grassroots level.
“It is my honour to reaffirm Japan’s commitment to providing continued assistance for the sustainable and inclusive development of Fiji, which is in line with the Government of Fiji’s national development objectives,” Mr Tsuguyoshi said.
