Officers beef up presence in towns, cities

- FONUA TALEI Edited by Ranoba Baoa

Chief of Operations Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdul Khan is reposting his officers in time for the new school year. This means there will be more Police presence in towns and cities to ensure safety and prevent crime.

This is after the Police Festive Season Operations which began on December 1 ended yesterday.

ACP Khan said they will be beefing up operations in towns and cities because of the expected increase in the number of people doing last minute back to school shopping for the 2021 school year.

“We will be sending out officers for visibility out there and also when the school commences we will be looking at traffic management for traffic flow and increasing officers at the schools to ensure that they are of assistance to the school teachers in terms of school patrols,” ACP Khan said.

Children selling on the streets

Police is working with various stakeholders to address the issue of children selling food on the streets until the late hours of the night.

In some instances ACP Khan said they have approached the children and transported them back to their parents and guardians and have spoken to them about the responsibility of looking after them.

He said they have also received reports about children being left unattended in shops and public places.

“We are working with other agencies it’s a whole of government approach not only the responsibility of the Police,” he said.

“You (parents) need to look after these young ones, they are the future of this country. When you send them out they must be the responsibility of someone accompanying them or else refrain from sending them because we have seen a couple of deaths on our roads due to unsupervised children left alone and there have been some deaths through negligence.”

The Police are also using CCTV cameras to monitor certain hotspots in the city.
