So Far, So Good Semi

- SIMIONE HARAVANUA Edited by Osea Bola simione.haravanua@fijisun.

Semi Radradra has more loads on his shoulders as captain than most people realise, says Flying Fijians coach Vern Cotter. And so far so good for the Somosomo, Taveuni native in his first stint as he led by example in the 3824 win over Georgia in the Autumn Nations Cup last December.

Cotter rated his captain for the future who made sure the team tried their hardest during training and pumped up on game day.

Speaking to SUNsports from New Zealand, Cotter stressed the importance of having the right man to lead the Flying Fijians building up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

He said Radradra embodies the 3 C’s-Caring, Courageous, and Consistent.

His first leadership task was a snippet of his capabilities with a win over Georgia that included a number of debutants.

Cotter said Radradra’s leadership would help young players.

“Semi is our captain and is an important figure as a role model, leader and excellent player,” he said. “He will with other key members demand and lift the standard of the squad.

“Radradra showed class and have really set the standards for the current and the future Flying Fijians. He has proved that professionalism starts from a young age and with great family support. According to a Flying Fijian halfback Simione Kuruvoli, who made his debut against Georgia, said Radradra is a captain that wears many hats in the team.

“Even if he is having a bad day, he always encourages the team and us in a positive mood.

“The team follows the leader. If the captain is not serious during training, then the players will feel that they can too but he is always on his toes. His attitude is everything a team wants in a captain.”

Cotter adds that Melbourne Rebels and Flying Fijians halfback is another player that will help lift the standard of rugby.

“Frank Lomami is one of those players who showed great credibility,” he said.

“But all players unselfishly will do what best for the team- old players will pass on knowledge to younger players, younger players will push hard to get regular spots - standards will be high on and off the field.”
