The Fiji Rugby Union has been urged to design a 7s series that includes small teams from around the country,

Fiji Bitter Mokani 7s official Seremaia Vueti sounded the warning yesterday at Ratu Ravuama Memorial School ground in Tailevu on the occasion of the annual event. The former Tailevu captain said the Super 7s Series, which starts on Friday at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, hinders development of rugby’s short code.

“Our objective through the years is to nurture and develop grassroots rugby in Fiji unlike the Super 7s Series which focuses only on the top 16 clubs,”Vueti said. “Understandably, the objective of the series was to give players game time building up to the Tokyo Olympic Games in July.

“We are targeting the cream of the crop leaving out players in villages and in the islands who could provide X-Factors.

“And what if the Olympic Games doesn’t happen, what is out Plan B? “All the small teams need to be included in the main tournament “We need to follow the BP Oil Provincial 7s format in the past which identified some very good players like Rupeni Caucaunibuca and many more.”

Yesterday, some of the teams which will play in the Super 7s Series like Raiwasa Resort and Police lost out in the elimination stages. A team from the interior of Naitasiri defied the odds when it played Fire in the Cup final.

The Koicolo Brothers from Nawaisomo lost 5-12.

Results:

Finals Womens Netball: Coastal

Magic 23 - 5 Dakuivuna

Mix Netball: Friends 19-14 Yanuyanu Wipers
