‘A good newspaper is a nation talking to itself’

-

Dewan Chand, Suva

The daylight saving comes to an end on Sunday 17th and teachers report to schools for staff meetings on Monday the 18th. On Tuesday 19th, thousands of cheering and smiling students (Primary and Secondary) return to their respective schools. School buses will be packed to capacity. However, the first timers to kindergarten or class one will cling to their mothers apron strings unwilling to go! But go they will. Yes, Tropical Cyclone Yasa’s fury and might have failed to deter the Fijian spirit.

From all reports it is now clear that all schools affected by TC Yasa will open on schedule for classes. This is no mean achievement considering what Fiji has gone through after cyclone Yasa.

Some villages and schools were completely devastated. But huge thanks to the Fijian Government and many agencies who sprung to action and came to the rescue of the most vulnerable in our society.

Our immediate neighbours, Australia and New Zealand provided much needed support. Military engineers from Australia and Fiji left no stone unturned to ensure that all schools were repaired in time. This is deeply appreciated by the community.

The last two weeks saw hectic buying of books, shoes, uniforms and other needs of our children. Parents (Mothers in particular) visited shop to shop looking for the items they wanted for their little darlings. Children accompanied their parents and were equally excited for the events unfolding.

The school corridors will be filled with a cacophony of children’s voices. Friends meeting friends. The entire school environment will be re-energised .

Teachers would have worked plans for the term.

New teachers would have been briefed what to do and what not to do. Well the scene is set and we look forward to a great and successful academic year.

May I wish all teachers and the students the very best for 2021.
