‘Secure belongings when on public transport’
Members of the public are urged to keep their belongings safe when traveling in public transport in light of the recent grab and run incidents in Suva.
Fiji Bus Operators Association
President Nisar Ali Shah said while it was impossible to identify offenders before they boarded buses, commuters needed to secure valuable items to avoid having their belongings snatched.
“I’m aware of the case in Nabua but we can only say that the traveling passengers have to be mindful, they have to look after
their bags because we don’t know what’s the intention of people who
sit in the buses,” he said.
“It’s very hard because drivers are concentrating on driving on the road so it’s down to the traveling passengers to look after their belongings.”
He said the onus was on various bus companies whether or not they would choose to install cameras in their busses for the safety of passengers.
“Most of the buses around Fiji do have cameras but it all depends on the individual bus companies on what they want to install.
“It’s about over 2000 busses so it’s one incident that has happened but I haven’t heard of any cases in the western division but I see that’s kids doing this not old or matured people.”
Fiji Taxi Association President Raben Singh said he was also only aware of the lone case at the Damodar City in Suva.
“We have already informed drivers and they are supposed to drive to the police posts or checkpoints and inform them before they leave the place because all the police stations are available,” he said.
