Students of Qalitu District School in Cakaudrove were overjoyed on their first day of school after receiving stationery from the Nasinu Junior Chamber yesterday.

The group from Viti Levu headed by vice president of capital project, Avinash Pillay also distributed vouchers for building materials to families affected by Tropical Cyclone Yasa in the Northern Division. Mr Pillay said the group members couldn’t describe how happy they were to see the smiles on the children’s faces.

“There are 171 students from Year One to Eight and 18 early childhood students and they all received bags and stationery,” he said.

“Two classrooms, one ablution block and four teachers’ quarters were damaged.”

He said the teachers whose quarters were damaged received tents from UNICEF. Qalitu District School head teacher Peniana Pickering thanked the group for their timely assistance. She said it was a blessing to see the members bring smiles to children on the first day. Mr Pillay said the group formed last year was more than happy to assist the affected families and children in the North.

“It is a 30 member group and all are from the Suva-Nausori he said.

“It doesn’t matter where we come from because in such times it is all about helping those in need so that hope may rise to move forward in life. We chose to help this school as by the time we approached the Ministry of Education this school was last on the list and yet to receive assistance.”

Feedback: corridor,”
