Squash Fiji development is on track after a successful McDonalds Junior Squash tournament last Saturday.

With another tournament scheduled to take place in Nadi next month more players are expected to participate.

The competition gave the officials a glimpse of the talent young squash players in Fiji have.

More than 35 squash players participated at the tournament.

Speaking to Sun sports president Blair Macaskill said the tournament was an eye opener.

“I’ve been really impressed with the enthusiasm of these juniors and how quickly they have learnt the basics and skills to play,” he said.

“At these early stages of learning squash the focus should be on personal development, participation and enjoyment of the game before results.”

“This is the first Junior squash tournament in Fiji for over 10 years.”

“With our junior coaching programs now running at 4 clubs around the country (Suva, Nadi, Lautoka and Savusavu) we felt the timing was right to host the first tournament in Suva which will be followed by another in Nadi next month.”

We had 35 players competing on Saturday in the U9 (skills competition), U11, U13, U15, U19 grades. Almost all entries were from Suva however we had Amyrah Kartiyani travelling from Nadi.

“It was an excellent day and well attended by parents and supporters who were very entertained seeing their young ones play.

“Our Junior programme is still quite new so most of these young players took up squash in the last 6 months. Our coaches however have done a great job getting the players ready.

“We are very thankful to our Junior partner McDonalds Fiji for making this tournament possible as well as the parents and family members who support their children to play squash. “To the kids who wants to participate in the next competition please don’t hesitate to do so.”
