President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote became the first Head of State to visit some schools in the North that were affected by Tropical Cyclone Yasa.

Bua District School, Galoa Island Primary School, Lekutu Secondary School and Dreketi Primary School welcomed President Konrote and his delegation and echoed their honour in meeting him for the first time.

President Konrote and his delegation were in the North this week visiting affected areas and assessing the rehabilitation work done by the Australian Defence Force and Republic of Fiji Military Forces. Bua District School head teacher Nitya Narayan said it was a wonderful opportunity.

Mr Narayan said they had faced past challenges such Tropical Cyclone Winston, COVID-19 pandemic and Cyclone Yasa.

Mr Narayan said the school fence was washed away by the flood and destroyed two classrooms, one library, office building with office equipment and documents, kindergarten classroom and the teachers’ quarters.

At Galoa Island Primary School the President pleaded with parents to ensure that their children’s health was maintained and to continue to nurture them.

He was pleased that the school was opened despite the challenges for a proper water supply.

Five-year-old Joseva Veta was the first child to shake hands with the President. In his excitement he told the President his name and that he was a kindergarten student. Joseva wants to

join the Australian army after being inspired by their work and presence on the

island in rebuilding the school.
