Baber rates players performanc­e

Gareth Baber was impressed with the performanc­e on day one of the Super 7s Series at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka yesterday.

The Fijan 7s coach is monitoring young players for the future to replace seasoned players like Seremaia ‘Jerry’ Tuwai and Sevuloni Mocenacagi.

Baber was impressed with young players like Taniela Sadrugu and Kitione Salawa.

The 24-member training squad for the Tokyo Olympics played for their respective clubs.

Players like Sadrugu, Salawa and Jiuta Wainiqolo featured for Tuwai’s LAR Barbarians.

“I’m pleased with what we’re doing. It has been a tough year, but it’s good to see the top 16 teams going against each other,” he said.

“I’m pleased with the quality of the games in the first two rounds of the pool play. I think teams need to be more discipline­d.

“They will just get better and better and what I’m after is that level of competitio­n is always there for the players.

“Players are what we have camp.

“We do it being been tested with learning in

against each other

in training, but there is nothing better than knowing you would come against.”

He praised Barbarians Sadrugu and Salawa for a good game against Yamacia in their first match. “Yamacia started well but the Barbarians got some quality players like Sadrugu and Kiti,” he said. Baber is not seeking replacemen­t players for specific positions.

“I will always looking for backup players. Tuwai will move on at some stage,” he said.

“My selection process is not just now but the future as well. So we are looking at players who can replace them.”
