Vollmer returns to the track
Triple jump champion Eugene Vollmer has recovered from his injury and competes in today’s Fiji Athletics competition at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.
Vollmer and Pacific sprint king Banuve Tabakaucoro are using today’s competition to gauge their fitness.
Speaking to SUNsports yesterday the 31-year-old said it was important to have competitions. “For me personally and Banuve we need to get the gears turning and at the same time gauge our fitness,” he said.
“It has been five months since lockdown then we return to training so the transition is not that easy.
“I’m happy that we have a competition arranged because we can really see where we are and gauge to change in areas that we think needs improvement.
“I’m looking forward to the competition. We will try and see where we stand in terms of body conditioning and fitness.
“As for now we are just dusting the cobwebs and starting fresh in the competition.”
Olympic qualifier
Vollmer’s last competed at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa where jumped 15.5m.
“That was my last competition and I haven’t jumped or participated in any comp.
“I have to slowly work my way around trying to beat it.
“So I really need to work hard if I want to qualify for the Olympics.”
“Now the environment of the competition won’t be there because of the pandemic protocols. “For me and Banuve we just hoping that we are able to travel overseas and get some quality competition like what rugby 7s is doing with the Super Series.”
