Reaching out to the Tropical Cyclone Yasa victims in Vanua Levu was a heartfelt experience for a Nadi-based Chinese doctor, Zhihui Tu.

Dr Zhihui is the Director and Dean of the South Pacific Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He took 20 of his volunteer students with him to visit various villages in the north donating food rations and medicine supplies.

He said after watching the news and reading newspapers on the effects of Cyclone Yasa in Vanua Levu, he decided to set up a team and named it the “Yasa was Ruthless and Chinese give with Love team” to make a visit to the affected areas.

“We not only went there to supply food rations and medicine but we were there to see what has been destroyed and the help that was needed for the 74 families whom we see as mostly affected,” he said.

“While we were there we did research and analyse the most affected families. We have their details and the building materials they need.”

Dr Zhihui said the Chinese Love Initiative will also contribute in rebuilding a standard boarding school for Lekutu Secondary.

“We reach out and help because we believe that we are family,” he said.

Yesterday at his office in Nadi, he conducted an exhibition of photos of their visit with all the names of those who have been affected and their details.

He said they have will work with

the Government and Fiji Police Force in ensuring that what was donated was used for its purpose. Meanwhile, the Minister for Defence, National Security and Policing, Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu acknowledged Dr Zhihui, his team and the local Chinese community for their assistance for TC Yasa.

Also, their contributions to the local communities, to the economy and the overall development of Fiji.
