More than 5000 Fijians will benefit from a newly completed Government Station to ensure improved services are available at Wainikoro, Macuata, outside of Labasa.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Inia Seruiratu said they had started similar projects in Vanua Levu and had established a Government Station at Kubulau, Bua as well.
Mr Seruiratu said the Government leased 20 acres and brought
Government departments into that station.
“Initially, the practice was for government agencies to arrange their own leases, but we found out that is not a good practice and now we just have one lease as we bring the services closer to the people,” Mr Seruiratu said.
“These are areas deprived of accessibility to Government services previously and we have brought the agencies to the people in the hope it will make good use of the office as well.
“We’re bringing a district officer and a clerical officer to Wainikoro for the tikinas of Nadogo, Dogotuki, Udu, Namuka, and part of Cakaudrove.
“We will later provide them with a vehicle as well so they can utilise the services rather than the previous practice of travelling to Labasa,” he said.
Tui Nadogo, Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali was thankful to the Government for finally delivering his request for a Government Station.
Ratu Ilisaniti said the services would facilitate nearby districts of Nadogo, Namuka, Udu and Saqani.
He said people often had to travel far in order to access government services.
“This is a big relief as people will be able to save money and time from travelling far,” Ratu Ilisaniti said.
“This station is close and will be accessible for more than 5000 people.”
