Suva will host postponed mineral development public forum soon
Suva will host the postponed mineral development public forum that was supposed to be held at the Namosi Provincial Council office in Navua.
The Mining Division, an arm of the Mineral Resources Department, plays a regulatory role in administration of the Mining Act, Quarries Act, Explosives Act, Petroleum Act and International Seabed Management Act and Fairshare Act.
The Mineral Resources Department (MRD) have facilitated public forums in the Western and Northern Divisions to create awareness on Mineral Exploration and Mining activities in Fiji.
Acting director Mineral Resources Department Raymond Mohammed confirmed to SunBiz the department opted for the change in venue for more public attendance.
“The public forum in Suva will encourage more public presence given it is in the centre of the Central Division and more convenient for the populace to attend,” he said.
“This forum is intended to provide members of the public with information regarding mineral development.”
He said the forum was in addition to the Department’s ongoing landowners’ consultation and awareness programme for landowning units that host mineral exploration projects on their land.
“The Department has undertaken public forums in Rakiraki, Lautoka, and Labasa and these forums will be organised on a periodic basis.” Mr Mohammed highlighted that the members of the public would be advised once the venue and date are confirmed for the Suva forum.
