Minister Orders Staff Audit on FNU
The Minister for Education Rosy Akbar has ordered an audit on staff members of the Fiji National University.
This according to Ms Akbar would determine the quality of staff that currently teach at the university. This was revealed by Minister Akbar while opening the Fiji National University Students Association (FNUSA) National Council Meeting at the FNU Nasinu campus yesterday.
Ms Akbar said: “I have tasked your Vice Chancellor to carry out a staff audit and in the next six months he will give me a result of this.
“It would tell us if you have the right lecturers to teach because without that what filters down to your lecture rooms will have no effect.
“Staff audit what it actually means is that you all get the best people to teach. That is very important.”
She said FNU was Fiji’s premiernational university and Government contributed a lot of money towards it and it was only right that they ensure quality teaching for its students.
“The Government contributes millions of dollars towards the operation of Fiji National University, a lot of Government funding is diverted towards your education.
“So the University Council we have been appointed is basically the governing body of FNU and we have tasked them with the responsibility of growing the National University.
“The university has grown and there is a lot of potential for the university too.”
She urged the student council to ensure that their voices were represented in the council and were heard by the council.
FNUSA national president Ketan Lal welcomed the staff audit initiative by the Government.
“I think it’s a very good thing, a step forward because we have students who question us about staff and the barriers that exist among them so we welcome the idea of the staff audit,” he said.
