Concern over 18th man rule in NRL

-

Sydney: Several NRL clubs are concerned with the game’s decision to rush in the 18th man rule and the stipulation that only an emerging player can fill the new role.

The NRL announced on Tuesday it will introduce an 18th-man rule from Round 5 in direct response to a recent spate of injuries and concussions.

The Australian Rugby League Commission agreed in principle to the new law, which will allow clubs to activate an 18th man only when three players from a team have failed head injury assessments.

However The Sydney Morning Herald reported some clubs took exception to the “emerging player” prerequisite.

Some clubs are also not pleased with the prospect of not playing a member of their squad each week, although it’s likely the NRL will consider allowing a player from the lower grades to sit on the bench.

The NRL chose to introduce the law in Round 5 to give themselves more time to iron out the kinks and confirm the logistics.

The clubs will have the opportunity to raise their concerns when the NRL begin consultation this week.

Prior the rule taking effect, the ARLC will consult with the Rugby League Players Association, NRL clubs and coaches.

The NRL will also need to determine the criteria around what constitutes an emerging player, which is an element that has come under scrutiny due to the dangers involved. The fear is subjecting an inexperienced player to the dangers of a game where three players have already been concussed and also making them sit and watch a full game if they are not required.-Fox Sports
