Receiving a Fiji National University Students’ Association (FNUSA) scholarship was a major boost for Vashnita Chand, especially since it will help lessen the financial burden on her parents. The 19-year-old is pursuing her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).

“It’s great to see our student association implementing these kinds of assistance to help the students,” Vashnita said.

“My parents have paid my fees through FNPF (Fiji National Provident Fund) and the assistance I have received today will help my other expenses like buying my lab coat.”

The former Central College student scored 379 out of 400 during her Year 13 External Examination last year.

Another scholarship recipient, Timoci Raikasala who is pursuing his Bachelor in Animal Science said the assistance he received would help him a lot.

He hails from Daku Village in Motoriki, Lomaiviti with maternal links to Namara Village in Tailevu.

“My dad is a farmer, and this assistance will lift some burden from him,” Timoci said.

“It means a lot to me to be one of the recipients and this assistance has motivated me to work hard.”

The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students who demonstrate excellence in undergraduate or postgraduate studies. Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts,

Rosy Akbar commended the association for the initiative.

Ms Akbar reminded the students to prioritise their studies because they will have more time to socialise later in life.

She advised them not to misuse the assistance given to them.

Fifteen students were doing their Bachelors and three are currently doing their postgraduate studies.
