Major changes will be reflected in next National Disability Awards as the organising committee are reviewing the dates for the 2022 event.

National Disability Awards chairperson Ranjnel Prasad said while this year’s event was a major success, the committee hopes to have a bigger 2022 event.

He said while there were challenges in organising the event, it proved to be a success.

“We had a black and gold theme event this year because we are trying to promote equality and inclusivity of the major events internationally, this year was more of an Oscar’s theme. I plan to have a Bollywood theme next year. “Next year we plan to have the awards towards the end of the year, we are looking at October because we understand that at the beginning of the year, people would be committed to other activities. We plan to host it in October and will also celebrate Fiji Day. We also looking at having a Bollywood themed event,” said Mr Prasad.

Awards

He said the organising committee received 80 applicants this year compared to 45 in 2020.

“We received strong applicants and I thank the judging committee for their input in selecting the winners. There were 10 awards given out at the event, we are looking at organising more workshops in next year on the award categories so everyone has a good understanding of the various awards,” he said. He adds the audit team are currently looking through the funds collected from the awards and plans to release a statement on amount collected.

Mr Prasad estimates that $60k was raised from the charitable event however, the audit team is yet to determine this.
