The Land Transport Authority of Fiji (LTA) is urging motorists to plan their trips in advance, be patient with other road users, and to strictly follow all road rules this Easter long weekend.

The long weekend started yesterday and ends after Monday April 5.

“Many Fijian families look forward to Easter as it is a time of celebration and reflection, as well as take full advantage of the time off and catch up with family and friends,” said LTA chief executive officer, Samuel Simpson.

“Unfortunately, the holiday season is also when we often see a spike in road injuries and road fatalities, which is often avoidable.

“Drinking and driving, overspeeding and plain negligence on the road is never acceptable, regardless of the situation.”

“No amount of celebration justifies a blatant disregard to road safety rules. They are there to protect you, your family and other road users alike. If you plan to celebrate with alcohol, do so at home and do not even think about getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.”

Mr Simpson added that the road rules apply to all Fijian road users and not just to motorists.

“Motorists and pedestrians alike need to take care when using or crossing the roads. Just as motorists are expected to not drive under the influence of alcohol, pedestrians must also refrain from walking around, under the influence of alcohol,” he said.

“Alcohol slows down your reaction times and dulls your senses which affects a person’s ability to determine the correct response to a potentially dangerous situation.”

Mr Simpson also reminded parents and guardians to be particularly vigilant when it comes to the safety of their children.

“Our highest priority is to always ensure the safety of all Fijians on our roads, especially the safety of our children who are most at risk. We give advice and enforce road safety rules, but we alone cannot keep children out of harm’s way. Parents and guardians must do their part to prevent their children from getting hurt, or worse.”

The CEO urged all Fijians to dedicate themselves to making it a death and injury free Easter and wished families a safe, happy and blessed Easter holiday for 2021.
