Nabua crime Dewan Chand, Suva

Recent gang fighting in Nabua spoiled the Holy Easter weekend.

It spread fear and restlessness in the community. Yes, Nabua is infected with criminals who live in the surrounding squatter settlements. These criminals allegedly deal in drugs and prostitution and other forms of crime.

Abdul Khan, the Assistant Commissioner of Police is making overtures to the factions to bring about calm and peace in the area. The effort is laudable. However, past experience has shown that no community policing has ever succeeded. Therefore, it is logical that this cosmetic effort on part of the Assistant Commissioner is bound to fail.

The causes of criminality in Nabua are far deeper than meets the eye. There are hundreds of youths who are jobless and high on drugs. Assault on taxi drivers, snatching of bags and other forms of petty crimes occur in Nabua daily. It will be a herculean task to round them all for a sensible discussion and bringing an end to the perpetual feud.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not helped the situation. Addition of the number of unemployed in the squatter settlements has added to the social problems. Nabua crime situation will continue until the economy bounces back to absorb the unemployed youths.

Religious tournaments

Sukha Singh, Labasa

Is it a good thing to have separate sports tournaments during Easter for different religious organisations?
