Teams primed up for 2021 Skipper Cup season
It’s that time of the year and it’s almost upon us. After all the pre-season off and on field prep, the Skipper Cup Premiership 2021 kicks off on Saturday.
This is a much needed break for fans, who wanted to watch quality, real rugby, as the top eight teams in the country get ready to battle for provincial supremacy.
World Rugby has set the pace for the season by announcing funding for the Fijian Drua’s inclusion in the 2022 Super Rugby season. Therefore our players have a lot to play for and impress Flying Fijians coach Vern Cotter.
Already there have been interests from our players abroad wanting to join the team in the Super Rugby inaugural season.
But our local players must prove their worth to be considered.
Suva to miss star players
Being the defending champion, the capital city side must up the ante to keep the title for another year.
Minus Republic of Fiji Military Forces’ Penijamini Makutu and John Stewart who left for peacekeeping duties in the Middle East and the veteran Isireli Ledua (retired), Suva have strength in depth and more reserve in the tank to defend the title.
Nadroga had a slow and seesawing start last season and must change tact and plan to kick off with a bang. The clash takes place at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.
Big test for Rewa
Having been promoted to the Skipper
Cup competition this year, it should be a baptism of fire for the Ro Alivereti Doviverata-coached side. Rewa has the chance to wrest the Farebrother –Sullivan Trophy from the champions at Prince Charles Park, Nadi.
As part of a community outreach programme, the jetsetters helped in cleaning up Nadi Hospital and Wailoaloa Beach.
Back to Korovou
The clash of the traditional neighbours, Naitasiri and Northland, always lived up to expectations and fans should expect another crackerjack at Gatward Park in Korovou.
Tailevu to do it right
This should be another top billing and Tailevu needs to do it right from the start and consolidate its
position among the top six teams in the country.
With so much firepower from the Fiji Corrections Service personnel, Namosi should have the upper hand but the onus is on Tailevu to score an upset win in the opening round at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori.
