Akbar Breaks Ground for New Classrooms in Bua
Agroundbreaking ceremony for a $340,000 classroom block for Lekutu Secondary School was done by the Minister for Education Rosy Akbar yesterday. The school was heavily damaged during Tropical Cyclone Yasa on December 17.
Ms Akbar said while trying to be fair to all the schools, she held Lekutu Secondary School close to heart. This was because of the firsthand experience stories of the cyclone. It was relayed to her while she was visiting the school on December 18.
She recalled how the stories were not only horrifying, but also painstaking to hear.
“Today, we’re here for the groundbreaking ceremony for your classrooms,”
Ms Akbar said.
“These are not your classrooms. You will fledged facilities.”
Ms Akbar assured that Government was constructing facilities similar to those schools built in the Western Division.
“We can build buildings for you, but what happens within the buildings, the teachings that happen within the buildings is what matters,” Ms Akbar said.
Ms Akbar encouraged the students to focus on their studies and improve on their results.
“One thing is for certain that natural disasters and pandemics have permanent have fullytaught us – what is here today, may not be here tomorrow,” she said.
“Opportunities that we provide for you today was not there when we were students.
“As a Government, what we’re trying to do is take off a lot of responsibilities off your parents’ shoulders.
“The onus lies in you, proper discipline, commitment, passion and hard work,” she added.
The Minister for Education thanked the teachers, school management and donors for their partnership.
