Software installations should be carried out by a genuine software provider for companies and individuals to run a service worth their money.

Shivneel Narayan, who is an Information Technology (IT) Technician with over 10 years of experience in software installations says Fiji currently does not have much piracy laws which is why pirated software are still circulated in Fiji.

Software products

He said people in Fiji cannot afford a high price for software products, so they opt for the cheaper ones. The 28 - year-old adds that some people do not realise that the software product is pirated until later when it starts to play up.

“For example, one organisation that we had visited, had installed pirated software and just recently, Windows updated its security features and all this pirated software started crashing, people started to lose their data,” said Mr Narayan.

Technology advancement

He said while people are adapting quickly to the use of technology, it is equally important for their devices to be updated with the latest software to protect their data. “Everything is moving towards technology side and people need to use genuine software especially when they are using Windows and Microsoft Office because these are productive software,” he said.

“There are not many software developers in Fiji; people buy from authorised sellers from overseas to sell at a much higher rate.” Mr Narayan developed his skill in installing software while studying at University in Fiji where he started designing websites.

He now runs a small business of software solutions based in Raiwaqa.
