Fifteen communities in the coastal Macuata province have received food and cash donations from Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Fiji.

The donations are to support and help sustain 700 households with their food security and daily livelihood. This is part of ADRA Fiji’s TC Yasa Food Security and Livelihood Project in partnership with the New Zealand Aid Programme. ADRA communications officer, Losalini Bolatagici said the immediate intervention was focused on debris management and cleaning up within the communities. Ms Bolatagici said the assistance was also aimed at sustaining individual households, communal livelihood and promoting social cohesion.

She said four months after TC Yasa ravaged Kia Island in Macuata, people on the island were still struggling to put food on their table.

“People from the three villages of Ligau, Yaro and Daku depend mostly on supplies from the sea but have no staple food supplies to complement it,” she said.

Josaia Wasasala, a 68-year-old resident of Ligau village, said he was grateful for the assistance as they had struggled to put food on their table.

“We don’t have enough root crops or vegetables on the island as we have just started replanting rootcrops ,” Mr Wasasala said.

He said villagers on the island faced difficulties in buying basic food items such as flour and rice after their sources of income were affected.

Kia Island villagers also received chainsaws to help in clearing debris and practise waste management after TC Yasa.

Villagers were also assisted with seed packs.
