COVID-19 here to stay, will continue spreading if we don’t do anything to combat it

Our COVID-19 cases are rising sharply with record numbers being announced daily – just as the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services Dr James Fong had anticipated.

We are hovering around 6000 active cases currently and the daily numbers aren’t looking good.

This means COVID-19 is here to stay and will continue spreading rapidly if we don’t do anything to combat it.

And whilst we can all sit and whine about the untimely swabs and results by the Ministry of

Health team, we need to seriously think of our frontliners.

These frontliners have been at the forefront of the battle from day one. They have been working around the clock to look after the health of our people.

Some have been away from their families for months now. They risk exposing their families to the virus and thus have to stay away from them.

But even they are human beings. They all have a breaking point. At the current rate the cases are rising, our medical frontliners are under extreme pressure.

And with their colleagues constantly testing positive for COVID-19, it only means they have to work longer hours and more days draining their own energy further.

We are a small country with a small medical team. The team is enough to look after normal illnesses. But to handle 6000 plus cases of COVID-19 only is unimaginable.

If not for ourselves and our loved ones, we need to think of our medical frontliners and their sacrifices.

It’s not hard to stay at home. It’s not hard to vaccinate. It’s not hard to wear masks.

But what is hard is working around the clock daily – on your feet during the long-tiring shifts. What is hard is staying away from your loved ones.

But this is a sacrifice our medical professionals are making to keep Fiji safe – to look after our people.

Let’s play our part and help stop the further spread of COVID-19.
