Women’s rugby on the go
The Fiji Rugby Union’s investment in women’s rugby in the country is the driving force behind the Team Fiji women’s rugby sevens team to the Tokyo Olympic Games.
In a video, Team Fiji women’s rugby sevens manager Divela Naucukidi said, they are determined to do well at the Olympic Games in order to attract more players, officials and match officials. “We’ll keep pushing those boundaries,” Naucukidi said.
Team physiotherapist, Jennifer Khalik, said the players had really worked hard to be where they are today.
“We’ve also received a lot of support compared to what it was like in previous years.”
Team captain, Rusila Nagasau, said at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, they reached the quarterfinals and they are out to improve on that.
“I’ve been playing for the past 10 years and to play in the Olympics is what I had working on,” she said.
The FRU included women’s rugby to be part of its annual provincial union competition for the past two seasons.
Players who were identified from the Skipper Cup competition include, Sesenieli Donu, Reapi Ulunisau and Aloesi Nakoci who are named in the Olympic squad.
