We need to take away the ‘rubbish’: Cotter

Fiji Airways Flying Fijians head coach Vern Cotter was not happy with their 60-13 loss against the All Blacks in the second Test in Hamilton on Saturday night.

However, he indicated that the two Tests against the world’s best will help them improve in the future Test matches.

Speaking at the post match press conference, Cotter highlighted some of the weaknesses they need to work on.

“I think we are disappointed because up to the 25th minute we’re still in the game, this time to concede penalties in the 35th minute. These penalties were on the ruck offences,” he said.

“We made it so hard for ourselves and when we did compete, although we competed well.

“Analysis from the game is really simple, just take away the rubbish that we gave the opposition team and just believe what we can construct now, what’s in play actually.

“I think we need to change a few habits, I think we need to stop taking into account that these things hurt us if we want to be a competitor so we need to take that on board, we need a shift.

“If we look at the components of the game, we need to be competitive– I think physically we are okay, dynamic, speed and explosive energy. But we don’t maintain it so need to work on ourselves a little bit on that.

“Driven maul and push scrums to try and get penalties, we are a little vulnerable there. We need to work on ourselves and become better on those part of the games, but with the other part of the games we dominated and I thought we put on some good defensive plays in the second half. We missed 20 minutes of game in the first half, we make sure we are going to work on that.

“Everybody is committed, we would like to see them move forward and exploit their potentials.”

Skipper Leone Nakarawa said: “We showed that we are capable of playing against Tier One nations. We need to improve on technical bits, like coach has said.”
