Villager Encourages Locals to Be Kind, Offer Help

- NICOLETTE CHAMBERS LAUTOKA Edited by Caroline Ratucadra

While a lot of assistance for needy families is flooding in from overseas, we the locals must not forget our own people. These were the sentiments shared by Voua villager in Tuva, Nadroga, 63-year-old Josiua Kasowaqa after he and his family embarked on their first major food ration distribution to several villages in the Nadroga area on Wednesday.

Mr Kasowaqa with his wife, Makereta Kasowaqa and daughter, Litia Raubeci including other family members had donated Punjas-sponsored food packs to about 500 families. The packs were worth $100 each.

They assisted villagers in Voua, Rukurukulevu, Talenauwa, Sanasana, Balenabelo, Vunayawa, Haru, Navere, Hovi, Nahoho, Malomalo and Cuvu Settlement. This is the first major food ration donation the Kasowaqa family has done.

“We had previously assisted them but on a smaller scale,” said Mr Kasowaqa.

“Most of these villagers were employed in resorts and hotels and had lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Some of them are also farmers.”

He said the rations consisted of flour, rice, sugar, milk and cooking oil, including other necessities and cleaning items.

“They were very happy with their items because a lot of assistance has been coming in from overseas but we in the villages too can lend a helping hand as well,” he said.

“I encourage others to do the same. We must have a kind heart.”

The former resort worker of 12 years said he was familiar with the struggles these families were going through.

He assured future food distributions to other needy families.

“I thank the Lord for giving me the idea to help these people and the strength to move around to do his work,” he added.
