Soroptimists Light Up for Century Success

- NICOLETTE CHAMBERS Edited by Ranoba Baoa

Soroptimist International members are lighting the way forward to mark the organisation’s 100 years of success.

Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International has been a global volunteer movement with a network of more than 72,000 club members in 121 countries.

In the lead up to the celebration next month, club members around the world are encouraged to light candles and make a wish for a better world for women and girls.

The club’s president, Zareena Bi, said the milestone achievement was a special one and was also to reaffirm the group’s commitment by helping all communities through ongoing and future projects.

Ms Bi said the four candles lit by the Lautoka Club members were to remember the Soroptimist International organisation itself, Soroptimist International South West Pacific Projects, Fiji and the Soroptimist International Lautoka Club.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world”.

“We will make this Soroptimist International 100 candle ceremony, a wonderful event, feeling our global connection.

“Making wishes and reaffirming our commitment to creating a better, more resilient, more suitable, safe and equal world for women and girls,” she said.

“Advocating for human rights and gender equality, at the heart of Soroptimist International’s advocacy is its work across seven UN Centres,

where our UN representatives ensure that the voices of women and girls are heard.”

She added that the membership work on grassroots projects successfully help women and girls achieve

their individual potential and to have a voice in communities worldwide.

The anniversary will be celebrated virtually from October 1 to October 3.
