Residents of Nasinu’s suburbs are happy to have a garbage collection that is regular unlike what had happened a year ago.

The Nasinu Town Council’s financial constraints had led to very irregular garbage collection including removal of white and green waste.

The suburbs were lined with piles of rubbish. Some residents put their kitchen refuse on the whire goods.

It had become a health hazard and not a particularly good sight.

Caubati resident Jyotika Vikashni believes that continuous highlighting of the issue by the

Fiji Sun had led to this issue being resolved.

“I can recall Fiji Sun highlighting the Nasinu rubbish situation almost two or three times in a week,:” she said.

“For my area, I can say Caubati has not seen the same problem.”

Nasole resident Jovilisi Narara said his suburb had also suffered.

“The piles of rubbish on the sides of the road did not look good. We learn this in school as to how such situations can lead to breed diseases and disease carrying agents,” he said.

“I can recall that every time a story on the rubbish collection was done, the rubbish was cleared. I thank the Fiji Sun for helping my community.”

Laucala Beach resident Bak

Krishna said it was not only the garbage collection the newspaper helped highlight but other things like uncut grass, overgrown footpaths and dirty drains.

In September 2020, the Suva City Council increased its garbage collection services to Nasinu.

A three party agreement involving the Ministry of the Local Government, the Suva City Council and the Nasinu Town Council was signed.

The Fiji Sun had been involved in constantly highlighting the garbage issue in Nasinu which if not dealt with would have caused a greater health hazard as COVID-19 had also set in.
