Fiji Sun street seller plans to set up canteen

- LAISEANA NASIGA SUVA

Taito Ledua has been a street seller for the Fiji Sun for a year and half and he is already turning out to be a star seller. Mr Ledua got laid off from the hospitality sector after tourism businesses had to close temporarily due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

He didn’t let this deter his spirits and became a street seller for Fiji Sun.

His real challenge was when Nadi and Lautoka went into lockdowns.

At a time when businesses closed in Nadi, Mr Ledua strived daily to sell more and more newspapers and succeeded. The more papers he was supplied, the more he sold out.

His strategy is simple – he has set his goals and he goes the extra mile to achieve these.

The 28-year-old uses a bicycle to travel around Nadi to increase his door-to-door sales.

With the money he has made from selling Fiji Sun, Mr Ledua managed to save enough to build his two bedroom concrete house.

And now he is planning to set up a canteen from his earnings of selling Fiji Sun newspapers.

What makes the job interesting

Mr Ledua said he found this to be an interesting job as he would meet new customers every day.

“The advantage of being a street seller is I am a carrier of information that people in Nadi need to receive every day,” said Mr Ledua.

While looking for customers on a wet or dry weather has its challenges, Mr Ledua strives on to achieve his daily targets.

“I just go with the flow and while it’s hard sometimes, I carry on knowing that God will help me. If I am placed in another location, I would be happy to do so and get more customers,” Mr Ledua said.

Mr Ledua is among street sellers in the West who are contracted by the Fiji Sun to sell newspapers.

In his days selling the Fiji Sun, Mr Ledua has found that people bought the Fiji Sun to know more about the Government.

“It also always has something regarding Nadi, either in news, or its major coverage in sports,” he said.

“I have personally noticed that whenever there is more sports news about Nadi, either in rugby or soccer, readers just love it.”

From Lakeba, Yadrana in Lau, Mr Ledua lives in Navakai in Nadi with his wife and three children.

With maternal links to Yasawa Island, the father of three sells newspapers in the morning and after midday, sells vegetables that are in season.

“I make money every day. The beauty about selling newspapers is I also get updated with news,” he said.

Mr Ledua had worked at Bone Fish Restaurant and House Construction prior to becoming a street seller.
