At the beginning of the month, police set up surveillance cameras in Nabua along the Kings Road. This was an initiative by the Fiji Police Force to put a stop to the robberies and the grab and run cases that had been happening along the stretch of road between the Mead Road roundabout and Nabua Village.

Over the course of the year, Fiji Sun had continuously highlighted stories of such incidents. Some stories have included the violent grab and run where a Narere woman was dragged through the bus as the alleged robber pulled her purse and she refused to let go.

One of the victims of the Nabua grab and run is Shirleen Prasad.

In July this year, Shirleen Prasad lost money and other valuables as a man grabbed her purse from inside the car.

Her story was highlighted by the Fiji Sun and she believes this led to the Fiji Police Force to charge the youth.

“Thank you very much for sharing my story, it helped me to at least see the youth being charged. I hope I’ll get justice with your assistance,” she said.

Another victim of such an incident Shivnesh Lal had been robbed twice in the same location. One was when he and a friend were held and searched while they walked home to Cunningham and another was an attempt from inside his car in peak hour traffic.

Mr Lal said he was thankful to the Fiji Sun for raising awareness on the happenings in the area so other vehicle users could be aware of what was happening.

“I tried to tell my story so people can safeguard themselves and authorities can move to eradicate a huge social problem,” Mr Lal said.
