Police Corporal Lavenia Bechu has been actively involved with a number of youths in Ba, helping them to protect the environment and fight climate change. Her commitment to her work in also keeping youths away from criminal activities was shown after being part of the 20-plus youths during their first mangrove planting project at Namoli Village in Lautoka on Friday. A total of 3000 seedlings were planted.

The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations and Youth and Sports, Parveen Bala officiated at the project.

Corporal Lavenia, who is based at the Raviravi Community Police Post in Ba, has been at the forefront of this project, working alongside the ‘Let’s Save The World, Fiji’ youth group since the beginning of this year.

“We are working as a team to fight the issue of what climate change is doing to Fiji and the world,” she said. “I usually work with youths in these sorts of projects. “We were asked by the elders of the village to begin our project here because the area needs attention and we agreed. We will continue this project in the other areas in the Western Division.”

The president of the group, Alsheik Ashad Ali, said it was an achievement going forward with the group’s first project. He said the target was to plant 100,000 seedlings.

“The ministry had given us these seedlings and they have said they will continue giving it to us so that we can help them achieve their target,” he said.

The Taukei Vidilio, William Bouwalu acknowledged Government for the mangrove planting initiative.

“We started planting some mangroves last year and this year, however there is still a lot of space still left to be planted along the beachfront,” Mr Bouwalu said.

“We need to safeguard our beachfront from the threats of climate change.”
