510 Flags Around Albert Park to Mark Fiji Day
The flags have attracted the attention of many Suva residents bringing them a sense of celebration and joy
Signifying Fiji’s 51st year of independence, 510 sky blue Fiji flags have been pinned on palm trees lining Albert Park along Constitution Avenue and Victoria Parade in Suva.
The flags have attracted the attention of many Suva residents bringing them a sense of celebration and joy.
Toorak resident Nilesh Prasad said he noticed the flags this week.
“They look good, and I feel it gives us a sense of celebration. I think with all the restrictions we have had, the blue flags bring a sense of joy,” he said.
Alumita Davui of Namadi Heights said she would take her family for an afternoon trip to Albert Park on Sunday.
“I know there is no big march or celebration, but we will come for an afternoon family trip and take some pictures at the park,” she said.
Gyanendra Singh of Samabula said his afternoon walks around the park seemed much better with the flags.
According to the Suva City Council, this is what they have been doing since 2020 to mark the important date.
Suva Market preparation
The preparation to monitor and control an increased crowd at the Suva Market started earlier this week.
More than 1000 temporary vendors filled the market last weekend, and an even greater number is expected on Saturday with Fiji Day this weekend.
The Suva City Council staff started marking spaces and putting up barriers to provide more space for vendors.
This week the council is working to ensure a more controlled atmosphere compared to last week.
The council will also be ensuring more staff are present at the market.
