Fly a Flag this Fiji Day. Let’s Celebrate

- JYOTI PRATIBHA Feedback: jyotip@fijisun.com.fj

We have a lot to celebrate this Fiji Day. Fiji has seen a lot since the second wave of the Delta variant hit our shores. Our front-liners once again jumped into action, our Ministry of Economy team got busy looking at our policies, implementing new ones and tweaking current ones to best suit the new normal.

Our police men and women spent many hours manning checkpoints and enforcing curfew hours.

Our biggest gamble was- whether to push forth vaccination and learning to live with this virus or to stick to the old method of attempting to eliminate it.

This gamble paid off and Fijians came out in numbers to be vaccinated.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and his team will be making further announcements on the lifting of restrictions.

More sporting events would be allowed, a plan for reopening our borders would be made and once again we may see our national carrier flying that well known livery.

But this came with sacrifices.

Many doctors and nurses did not see their families for months. We lost a number of Fijians to this virus as well.

Unfortunately almost every life lost was an unvaccinated person.

Despite Government’s best efforts, a handful of Fijians chose not to vaccinate. This was the biggest blow to massive efforts to get every eligible Fijian vaccinated.

But as stated, only a handful chose not to vaccinate. What now? The new normal is here.

We can expect more Fijians especially those in the tourism sector to resume work once our borders reopen.

Fiji has been seeing record number of recoveries of our COVID positive patients, resorts around the country have been busy with locals checking in especially during the weekends and this weekend would be no different.

Our economy is on the right track, the blow from COVID has been less than what was anticipated, only because of the economic policies of Government.

This will no doubt see more economic activities around the country.

So, fly a flag this Fiji Day, we have a lot to celebrate.
