Treating the less fortunate with love and care is an important element for Fiji Day, says retired prison officer Anuradha Singh. She is the recipient of the Fiji 50th anniversary medal last year that recognized her dedication in her line of work at the Fiji Corrections.

As families celebrate Fiji Day at home, Mrs Singh said the true meaning of Fiji Day is treat everyone equally.

“No matter where we come from or which ethnicity you belong to, we are all united under the noble banner blue so we should be proud of our country,” she said.

Career

Mrs Singh started her career in 1981 at the women’s prison, a role her respected and enjoyed.

Her curiosity for prison life inspired her decision to start a career in corrections.

“When I went for the interview, I was only asked two questions on why I wanted to become a prison officer and what would I give to become the best among the rest women prison officers.

I challenged myself to do my best and to treat all inmates the same,” said Mrs Singh.

While living with her family in seven miles, Mrs Singh plans to prepare BBQ to celebrate Fiji day.

It has been no easy road for Mrs Singh after she lost her husband in 2007, juggling work and raising her two children.

I was so happy to receive this medal AS IT REflECTED ON MY DEDICATION TO MY role which I love. I HAVE ALREADY BEEN awarded several medals over the YEARS BUT THIS ONE is special because IT FALLS ON FIJI DAY. I LOVE THIS COUNTRY AND I AM PROUD TO BE A FIJIAN Anuradha Singh RETIRED PRISON OFfiCER

Challenges

While the journey was tough, she continued to strive on.

She found that inmates have interesting stories to share about what led them to prison.

“Without me asking, they would share openly about their families, struggles during childhood and what they face. This is because I see treat equally as family member and not as an inmate.

“I understand people would see them differently from outside but when you see and talk to them every day, then you would be able to understand them,” said Mrs Singh.

Her dedication to her role was noticed by the Fiji Corrections Services as she was nominated to receive a Fiji 50th anniversary medal.

“I was so happy to receive this medal as it reflected on my dedication to my role which I love. I have already been awarded several medals over the years but this one is special because it falls on Fiji day. I love this country and I am proud to be a Fijian,” said Mrs Singh.
