This year has been a challenging year for many. Despite the challenges, Fijians have appreciated for the things they still have, which is job.

After interviewing tailors at the Flea market in Suva, Fiji Sun has witnessed that the tailoring outlets were closed for almost six months due to COVID.

While speaking with Vinesh Naidu and Savitri Devi, they have counted themselves fortunate to be employed, even though their tailoring business was affected.

Mr Naidu, who is from Samabula said business during Fiji Day wasn’t as busy as last year.

“This is because of the pandemic,” he said.

He said they had been closed since April due to COVID.

“We just started last week Friday,” he said.

“For Fiji Day, we are looking for more customers and so far I have received four orders for Sulu Chamber.”

He urges Fijians to come to his tailoring shop to sew clothing for Fiji Day.

The 41-year-old has been operating his tailoring shop for four years and has been inspired to sew from his mother.

Meanwhile, Mrs Devi said her business during last year’s Fiji Day was way better than this year.

“I had received so many customers and had got so many orders,” she said.

She said she had received two orders for Sulu Chamber so far.

“I have been the tailoring business for almost seven years. I make sulu chambers, dresses and other needed clothes,” she said.

Mrs Devi said she was grateful that she still had a job even though her business was a bit slack.

“I have struggled but at least I have a job. I am the only breadwinner in my family. It is difficult during this trying times to afford since my business is not going so well but something is better than nothing.

“This is a sad year for many of us but since its Fiji Day, it reminds me of the stories where we gained independence and this makes me feel proud to be a Fijian.

“COVID-19 has affected Fiji in various ways, yet we are unified and my love for Fiji will remain the same no matter what hardships we go through.”
