A day of unity the Hussains say about Fiji Day
The real meaning of Fiji Day to a Labasa couple is for everyone to unite. Those were the shared sentiments of Mohammed Yunus Hussain and Yasmin. They have been married for 39 years. Mr Hussain is a retired employee of Fiji Sugar Corporation Labasa while his wife is a retired primary school teacher.
As the country celebrates Fiji’s 51 years of independence Mr Hussain, 62, said Fiji was the best place to live in because there was no war, bomb blasts and terrorism.
“With the little income or backyard garden we have we still have the spirit to share with others,” Mr Hussain said.
Mr Hussain’s father, Ibrahim came from India to set up an engineering business, Ibrahim and Sons in Labasa Town.
The business was run together with his father, his uncle and himself until he joined the Fiji Sugar Corporation where he was a fitter machinist for 32 years.
After he retired, Mr Hussain opened up his own business Hussain’s Chemical and Supplies in Labasa Town and thanked everyone who has had a hand in the business.
Ms Hussain, 59, who was a teacher for 20 years said parents should take out time to explain to their children what Fiji Day was all about.
“Our children should know about Fiji’s history and become good citizens contributing to nation building,” Mrs Hussain said.
“Everything begins from home and as a former teacher, mother, mother-in-law, daughter-in-law and grandmother, I have cherished all Fiji Day celebrations.”
She said even during this coronavirus pandemic people should take out time at home to reflect and be thankful that Fiji still exists as a nation.
“The most beautiful essence of Fiji is the nature of multiculturalism and so let us be proud about this,” the grandfather of a child said.
“As we take out time to celebrate Eid, Diwali and Christmas with each other, let us do the same for Fiji Day.”
