Programme to meet shortage of traditional plant engineers
Fiji is currently experiencing a skills shortage in traditional Plant Maintenance Engineering trade areas.
According to Fiji National University (FNU) College of Engineering, Science & Technology (CEST), there is an increasing demand for plant engineers in Fiji.
To meet this demand, Plant Maintenance Engineering courses at CEST, trains its students to be on par with industry demand.
Under FNU’s programme website, Plant Maintenance Engineering courses aims to meet the needs of students who have a general interest in industrial technology trades.
The programme also train students who are intending to choose a career pathway into traditional Plant Maintenance Engineering trades and related service industries.
This course provides opportunities for students to develop relevant technical, vocational and interpersonal competencies suitable for
employment and further training.
They can also develop skills, knowledge and experiences - such as teamwork, communication and occupational health and safety- that are transferable to other industries.
CEST believes there is a need for more highly trained new workers and up-skilling of existing workers in the manufacturing and service industries as the levels of newer technologies are increased.
“For example, there are vastly more complex electronics systems to be fitted and serviced in the Plant industry and new materials and techniques in the building industry.
“Everybody is affected to some degree by the need to understand and effectively use advancing technology in the industries and power plants, workshop, the construction site, the factory, office, home or farm,” CEST stated.
CEST offers Certificate IV in Plant Maintenance Engineering, Diploma in Plant Engineering.
Classes are offered at FNU’s Samabula campus.
