Bula Social Club Committee have an initiative to promote and raise Breast Cancer Awareness for the month of October.

Each Friday leading to the end of month are Pink days for the club.

Morning tea and fundraising drives are set for these days.

Bula Outsourcing team leader, Anne-Lysa Taylor, who is the Pink-a-thon champion, said her contribution towards the Pinktober awareness was to Pink walk for eight kilometers by seashore in order to collect funds.

“Our Pink-a-thon is to be held on the 23rd October. Our Pink walk will be sponsored by our friends, relatives and our Bula Outsourcing family. The last Friday will be a linked Virtual Tea Party with the Cancer Council.

“A cancer survivor will be speaking with us virtually, sharing their experience,” she said.

Initiatives

Ms Taylor said Pinktober was one of many community initiatives at Bula Outsourcing.

“We have the Bula Community Spirit; whose plan is to aid communities in the education sector,” she said.

“The Bula Wellness programme, an active health driven initiative for all staff and our Bula Social Club. Our Social club president,

Ilaitia Naqau has a close family member that is a breast cancer survivor.

“Four years ago Ilaitia’s step mother had a double mastectomy. The emotional difficult battles endured by the family and their survival impacted them all greatly.

“Having lived through this, the importance of being able to support those battling cancer and those that have survived has become a heart journey for him and us his Bula family.”

Fundraising

The team is currently collecting donations from colleagues, family, friends as well as Australian partners.

The funds collected will be given to the Fiji Cancer Society later this month.

“The Fiji Cancer Society Pink-a-thon is an open event; anyone can participate (following COVID-19 protocols of course). Main focus of the Pink-a-thon is to raise awareness on breast cancer and to show your support. One rule though – WEAR PINK,” Ms Taylor said.

She also said two of her colleagues have had very personal experiences with breast cancer survivors.

“Their family struggles through dealing with and helping with the battle of cancer has been difficult,” she said.

“Family relationships are the most challenging for all both during and post treatment.

“For these families the support given by all is so appreciated and allowed them to survive as a whole.

“The strength of the family has helped their family members battle this disease with a more positive attitude.”

She reminded people to maintain their medical check-ups with family doctor on a regular basis.

“Do not wait for symptoms to show up. Always provide support where you can, every

little bit helps even a smile. Promote initiative like Pinktober to continue to raise awareness,” she added.

“You are not alone. Dark times never last but Bright lights like you always do. Cancer does not define you, you will survive this. You are strength, you are courage, you will win.”
