Fiji Cancer Society holds first virtual pink-a-thon event to promote wellness
Fiji Cancer Society is holding its first virtual Pink-a-thon this year to promote wellness and reducing risks to cancer.
The event is a virtual event where individuals can sign up and choose a physical activity they wish to do in the month of October and at the same time raise funds.
Communications officer Grace Tuvakasiga said Pink-a-thon was a creative way of promoting healthy living while raising funds for cancer.
Ms Tuvakasiga said initiating the Pink-a-thon event allowed the Fiji Cancer Society’s Annual Pink Walk to continue in a non-traditional manner.
“The pandemic has allowed us to be a bit innovative and this was a solution. The Pink-a-thon uses the concept of a walk-a-thon where you are able to do any physical activity of your choosing and get friends & family to donate. In doing so you are promoting wellness and reducing your risk to cancer,” she said.
She said the Fiji Cancer Society hopes to continue the event in years to come as it was very encouraging to see people take part in the Pinka-thon.
“Apart from raising awareness & funds for the Fiji Cancer Society patient support services, the event is a new means to encourage people to partake in physical wellness programme. Which ultimately contributes to the reducing the risk of cancer and other non-communicable diseases,” said Ms Tuvakasiga.
So far, the Pink-a-thon event has so far received 20 registrations with more still expressing interest.
The target for each champion is 10km for those walking/running/ paddling/swimming while there is no target for funds raised.
While restrictions have eased, the pandemic had also affected plans to hold various awareness programmes.
“Pinktober is our largest fundraising campaign and this has affected our Programmes being mindful of the restrictions. Thus affecting our tea’s and awareness programs. That is screening for women and men,” said Ms Tuvakasiga.
