A-G is Pacific High-Level Champion for Oceans
THE Attorney-General and Minister responsible for Climate Change Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum participated virtually at the Amplifying Pacific Voices at COP26 through the Political Climate Champions HighLevel Launch Event held recently.
The event officially marks the beginning of a major regional campaign on amplifying Pacific voices in the lead up to, during and after COP26.
Leaders of the Pacific Forum have nominated the A-G to serve as the Pacific’s High Level Champion for Oceans at
COP26 as well as supporting the Champion of Finance, Prime Minister of Cook Islands, Mark Brown.
This responsibility reflects the faith placed in Fiji by the Pacific to amplify regional climate priorities in the global arena.
During the launch event, the A-G highlighted the need to mainstream the Oceans-Climate nexus into global climate discussions.
He added that grant and concessional finance for climate action and creating the right balance between adaptation and mitigation finance are crucial priorities for the Pacific going into COP26.
The A-G was joined by the following high-level champions at the event today:
• Cook Islands Prime Minister, Mark Brown – Climate Finance
• Republic of Marshall Islands, Minister for Finance, Alfred Alfred Junior – Climate Ambition
• Tuvaluan Minister for Finance, Seve Paeniu – Loss and Damage
• Palau Minister for Environment, Steven Victor – Environment Integrity
The upcoming COP26 will be held in Glasgow, Scotland from the 1 to 12 November 2021.
