Govt ‘empowers youth with skills, expertise’
“THE Government is empowering young Fijians with skills and expertise not only through competitions, but also through opportunities such as the Youth Farm Initiative programme.’
These were the sentiments expressed by the Minister for Youth and Sports Parveen Kumar while announcing the winners of the TikTok poetry competition held in Nadi recently.
Minister Kumar stated that whilst the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted the global and national economy including our daily lives, it has also become a driver of creativity and innovation.
“We have seen creativity in the submissions received. I am told the videos stretched from topics in COVID-19, food security, loving local food, backyard gardening, fitness and health. I am heartened by the approach and efforts of all participants who put together ideas to create their masterpiece with a message.
“At this juncture, I wish to reiterate, the importance of continuity in providing a platform to our youth to sharpen their talent, knowledge and innovation as this would encourage and strengthen their development.
The Minister stated that the Fijian Government is committed to eradicate all challenges faced by the youth but cannot do this alone without everyone playing their part in the community that they serve.
He urged everyone to utilise the ‘Talanoa’ concept championed by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and discuss ways and means to improve their current progress and partnerships going forward.
“Similarly, your Government believes in an affluent future for all young Fijians and your development now plays an important role in our realising that future and thriving in it.”
“Nonetheless in order to thrive, young people require a range of personal attributes that support you to make positive choices. Attributes like competencies, knowledge, experiences, behaviours and beliefs which are developed as you progress over the years.”
He also urged youths to remain focused on the positive side of life.
“You may not all be rewarded today but rest assured that your good deeds and the services to yourself, your peers, your associations and your communities are not in vain.”
