The newly opened Mega Supermarket and Hardware in Votualevu, Nadi was welcomed by communities in the larger Nadi area last Friday.

Speaking at the opening, Minister for Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport Faiyaz Koya said such investments sent a positive message to foreign investors.

“There is confidence to invest in Fiji - even during this time of pandemic,” Mr Koya said.

“I want to reiterate that the commitment of domestic investors remains critical to reinvigorate the Fijian economy,” he said.

Mr Koya hailed the contributions made to the economy by businessman Irish Khan during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, who was also present at the opening, said local investments represented a positive outlook on the economy.

Speaking to SunBiz, supermarket director Irish Khan said demand for another supermarket by his customers, following the opening of his first supermarket in Cuvu, Sigatoka last year was a driving factor.

“I had received many requests from my customers in Cuvu, so I thought why not?” he said.

“We believe in optimal customer service.”

Mr Khan said being involved with his customers to provide services efficiently was important.

“Our job is to provide service.” He said the new supermarket had created 12 new employment opportunities.

“The low prices Mega Supermarket offers would help the residents in Votualevu and the larger area despite having other supermarkets in this area,” he added.

Roseline Ross, one of the first supermarket customers, said the supermarket was very convenient.

“It has everything, including a hardware corner,” she said.

“So you know if you need anything urgently, you could always come here to purchase it at a reasonable price.” Mr Khan said he had plans to open a chain of supermarkets around the country in the future.
